What is Tooth Whitening?
Tooth Whitening, or Teeth Whitening, is a treatment that changes the shade of your teeth and makes them brighter. It works by using special whitening gels, that are only available by prescription from Dentists. We offer two types of tooth whitening - whitening at home or whitening in the surgery. You can choose from a variety of leading tooth whitening brands and we can help to give you guidance.
Some brands, such as Enlighten, guarantee a shade improvement to B1 - which is the highest natural shade you can be (anything whiter than that can only be achieved through cosmetics - such as veneers). We always recommend Enlighten for anyone wanting to achieve the highest possible shade increase. We also offer Philips Zoom Whitening which can make your teeth up to 6 shades whiter. The most effective whitening result still looks natural - so no need to worry that your teeth will look too bright!
Top 5 reasons for Tooth Whitening:
If you are unhappy with your shade and feel that your teeth could be whiter.
If you teeth are naturally more yellow and you would like them to be a whiter shade.
If you have heavy tooth staining then this is removed by Hygiene - not whitening - but we can whiten your teeth after Hygiene if you are looking for a brighter smile that makes you feel more confident.
Depending on your complexion, your teeth may appear a duller shade than they actually are, so whitening can lift the shade to counter this.
If you’re about to have restorations (fillings/chip repairs/crowns etc that are going to be visible) then we recommend whitening first if you are worried about your shade or thinking about whitening in the future. This is so your Dentist can match the shade of your restorative treatment to the whitened shade, rather than your natural shade - as whitening will only whiten natural teeth, not restorations (e.g. fillings). Fillings etc can be completed two weeks post-whitening.
What types of Tooth Whitening can I get at tooth?
At tooth we offer three types of Tooth Whitening suitable for all budgets and needs. All of our Tooth Whitening products are only available from dentists and can never be purchased legally online or in high street stores or beauticians. Enlighten Tooth Whitening is our premium whitening product, and is the only tooth whitening system to offer guaranteed results. Enlighten Tooth Whitening brightens to shade B1 - which is the whitest natural tooth shade possible (anything whiter can only be achieved through cosmetic treatment such as crowns, composite bonding, veneers etc!). So if you want to really guarantee a whiter smile, we recommend Enlighten.
If you’re looking for a good shade uplift, or working to a smaller budget, then Philip’s Zoom Tooth Whitening is a great choice for you and delivers great results. It is the world’s most popular whitening product, and at tooth we offer two Philips Zoom Tooth Whitening options:
Our Zoom In-surgery Tooth Whitening (also known as Chair-side Tooth Whitening) is done in one session of 100-120 minutes in surgery and top up syringes are given on the day to complete the treatment at home over the next few days.
We also offer Zoom Take Home Whitening, where gels and full instructions are given and you simply choose day whitening or night whitening and apply the gels 2 x per day for 30 mins for day whitening, or apply the gels overnight whilst you sleep for night whitening.
All of our whitening treatments come with custom made whitening trays, that are yours to keep and can be used for future top ups.

What should I expect if I am having Tooth Whitening?
Before any whitening you will need a Dental Check-up or New Patient Exam (at additional cost) if you haven’t had a recent exam with us. Alternatively, you can choose a free Tooth Whitening Consultation instead. This is so we can make sure that it is safe for you to proceed with tooth whitening. It also gives us the opportunity to discuss your whitening goals, available options and answer any questions.
You will also very likely need to book a Dental Hygiene appointment as the gels will not work properly if you have any build up of plaque or tartar on your teeth and you will not get the best whitening experience without this.
The next stage will depend on which brand you are choosing. For Philips Zoom Tooth Whitening take home, the first stage after exam or consultation is taking impressions. This is so we can make you whitening trays that are perfectly moulded to your teeth. We can make these for you in house, and they will usually be ready to collect the next day. On collection you will also receive your take home whitening kit which includes the gels.
If you are booking in surgery Philips Zoom Tooth Whitening then we will book you for around 100-120 minutes and we will start by taking the impressions. From there we will start the whitening process, which will involve a combination of protecting (barriering) your gums and applying the special tooth whitening gel. We then use our exclusive Zoom Whitening Lamp - people often call this laser whitening but it’s just a high intensity lamp that will activate the gel and trigger the whitening process. This will be repeated four times. On completion of the treatment, you will receive your custom made whitening trays and two additional whitening syringes to use to finalise the treatment at home over the next couple of days.
If you are booking an Enlighten Tooth Whitening, which is the only whitening system to guarantee results, then the process is a bit different. We will scan your teeth using our high tech intra oral scanner and your scan will go to the specialist Enlighten Whitening Lab, who will make your custom moulded trays. You will receive a special serum in the form of a toothpaste to help prepare the teeth before whitening. The next visit you will collect your trays and the Dentist will apply a special Enlighten de-sensitiser to reduce any risk of sensitivity. The rest you do at home and full instructions are given – this takes 3 weeks. After that you return for a shade check and review.
Please note - Dental Hygiene and Tooth Whitening are different treatments - in simple terms a Dental Hygiene appointment deals with issues (for example, plaque and tartar) on the outside of the tooth, and whitening changes the shade of the tooth from within. Find out more about Hygiene here.
